Debutantes related
Sometimes we hurt ourselves
By the Debutantes standards, this week was fairly action packed.
Tuesday gave us the practice that was referenced in the previous posting. Some of the things said there are true. Some are not as true. Some are even more true than you’d ever secretly want to believe.
But here is what is more importantly true, which must be shared with you:
Before the Debs could begin the practice proper, a NEW band, comprised of the traitorous twosome Baxter and Danny, formed a band called “The Debutantes Suck”. They have exactly one song. Here is what they look like:
The Debutantes Suck, in action
Drum solo?
The family business: Beating things with sticks
Runner Up “Shiftiest Eyed Expression Contest”
Winner: “Shiftiest Eyed Expression Contest”
And that was Tuesday.
Thursday was productive, though painful to the sensitive parts of your humble narrator. I had expected to have a pleasant evening of sitting on the floor in the corner of the studio, propped up against a folding chair while Glen worked.
However, I was forced to sing and play guitar. A lot!
Harumph.
I redid my vocal on “Glorious and Victorious”. We had deemed the original falsetto version to be “a little too fey, even by Brent standards”. So I went in and really belted it out, and while the resulting hernia is painful, I think the final results are worth it. With that original track added to the background as verbed-out ambiance, it’s all coming together nicely.
Then I was convinced that I would be able to retire to my corner, content to have done my bit for the night. Glen would be singing “I’m All But Done”, and while we’d all agreed that some day I would redo the evil “strummer guitar” (the most horrendous sound ever wrought from the plastic brain of a Kurzweil keyboard) with an actual acoustic, surely that wouldn’t be happening tonight, as I’d never had a chance to learn it.
But oh, I was wrong. So wrong! And really, knowing what I know about our band, and our album, and our recording style (The Debutantes motto: “Why learn before hand what you can teach yourself in the studio while being recorded?”) I’m not sure why I was surprised. But there you have it. I did the guitar part, stoppign and starting, cursing, peeing in the chair a little. And today I have a blister on my thumb.
Of course, as Glen Reid likes to say, “Boo hoo, fuck you.” Quite the wit, that one.
So that was this week. I will probably have to do that part again. It’s gonna sound really good, though. And once it’s finished it will sound like we recorded it spontaneously while sitting on Danny’s porch on a Sunday afternoon, and not at all like we did it via several takes with several microphones in the dark evening hours of December.
The boys are practicing on Sunday. I will be parking cars and eating crab rangoons, and that’s all you need to know about that.
Until then, light the advent candle for me.
